Where to stay in the Okavango Delta for Water-based Safaris
Okavango Delta accommodation is located in either permanent or seasonal wetland areas, leaving you with a choice between land-based options or water-based camps for your trip. Generally, we suggest a mix of both.
If mokoro canoe safaris are high on your to-do list, your best bet is to stay in water-based camps that offer year-round water activities. Kwetsani Camp, Xigera Camp and Jao Camp are 3 of our favourite water-based camps in the region. Kwetsani is elevated on a hillside amongst the trees and has been recently rebuilt, so it is really in great shape at the moment, and there has been no better time to visit it.
Where to stay in the Okavango Delta for Land-based Safaris
For the most well-rounded experience of the Okavango Delta, stay in a land-based safari camp, or a combination camp that will give you the choice between game drives and water activities.
Some of the best accommodation in the Okavango Delta can be found in the Moremi Game Reserve and the privately-run concessions that flank the park. The Moremi Game Reserve offers some of the most reliable big game viewing in the region, including strong numbers of predators and of the endangered wild dog.
In the Moremi, the luxurious Chief’s Camp, located on the permanently dry Chief’s Island is a wonderful place to see big game on game drives and walking safaris, and the camp itself is exceptional, is newly refurbished and is a wonderful retreat. Mombo Camp, not far to the North, has an outstanding reputation and will also be getting a rebuild this year, so book it now to be able to get into the new Mombo once it opens. Further to the north of the Moremi reserve and the Okavango Delta itself, it is very hard to beat Zarafa, a camp where just 4 tents host guests in a wild yet decadent, luxurious way. When choosing which part of the delta to visit, bear in mind that operators in private concessions also offer night drives and off-road driving, neither of which are available within the Moremi Reserve.
